SCA Packaging competition

Your challenge will be to rethink packaging in order to reduce the ovarall material usage, both in surface and weight: So, as a start, you should choose a product that you believe can be optimized in this respect. You are free to select any product, ranging from fruits, milk briks, chocolate, meat, ..., a mobile phone, a bicycle, a computer, ... you name it.

We advise you not only to look at designing the primary packaging (the first level of packaging to protect and pack the product) but also to look at the secondary packaging (outer case, wrap, ...).

Once you have done so, is key to understand the properties, characteristics and value of the product you selected in order to prepare your packaging design work.

For centuries, packaging has been used to: bundleprotect (preserve), transport (stack) and displaygoods. The only thing that has changed is the supply chain. Therefore, as a second step, consider where and how your product is being packed, transported, stored and ultimatly distributed or sold. In case that your packaging is also likely to be handled (lifted, stored, opened) by the shopper or end user, you should also consider any valuable attributes for these issues too.

For example, 'think of how the shopper will manage to carry the product into his/her home, unpack and get rid of the packaging'.

In the next weeks, we will explore each of the functions in more detail.  For more information please visithttp://www.scapackaging.com/design-challenge/

Good luck to all.
